Kennebunkport, Maine has been the residence of many prestigious families, most notably President George Bush. The streets are lined with historic old homes and beautiful American elms (ulmus Americana), including tree number 279. In February of 1999 this tree, with a diameter of five feet, was being trimmed and I was able to obtain wood to make these unique pens. The American elm, sadly, is a disappearing species. The tall, majestic trees are being destroyed by Dutch elm disease. Since the 1950’s Kennebunkport has been monitoring and caring for its elms to preserve their grandeur and beauty. Only 140 elms remain! This pen has been carefully handcrafted to serve as a reminder of Kennebunkport’s dedication to the preservation of the American elm. |
