About the time of Joshua L. Chamberlain's birth, a maple tree began to grow at his boyhood home. This picture, circa, 1840, of Joshua and his family was taken in front of their home in Brewer, Maine. During the great ice storm of 1998, a giant maple tree (the small tree highlighted in this picture) was destroyed. To honor the memory of Chamberlain, limited edition (3,000) engraved pens are being made from the remains of that tree. The engraving on each pen closely resemble the initials found on Chamberlain's Civil War revolver. With each pen sold, the pen maker is donating 10% of the purchase price to the Brewer Historical Society for the further development of Chamberlain Freedom Park.
