This pen is made from hardwood flooring from the Great Bowdoin Paper Mill, which is located on the Androscoggin River in Topsham, Maine. The mill was constructed in 1868 and originally produced paper from rags. Sometime in the 1870's, the mill stopped using cloth rags and converted to wood pulp, one of the first of its kind in Maine. In 1934 the mill, then owned by Pejepscot Paper Company, stopped producing paper. The buildings continued to be used for storage, packaging and other paper related uses. In 1968 up to 400 people continued to work at the mill. By the early 1980's Hearst Publishing Company closed the mill.

Over the years fire and time have taken their toll on the many buildings. The original brick building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is currently in the process of being renovated. The historic mill will house a microbrewery along with various other retail users. This architecturally impressive building is being rescued for future generations to enjoy.
